From a smoke free. climate controlled home and in near mint condition. There's some light on the surface buckle rash that's not easily seen. The previous (original) owner never noticed it at all. the pickup covers have some mild patina on the nickel plated covers. A gorgeous and quite rare US crafted Hamer. The US Hamers are among the finest electric Guitars ever made and their values are rising steadily.

This perfect guitar is a highly respected instrument. Shawn Tubbs, (one of Nashville's finest), has played a Talladega for years. His has Humbuckers. This one has the P90's which I prefer because of the meaner rock tones. This guitar screams and sings! It cleans up really nicely.

The Hamer Talladega with P90-style pickups (specifically the Seymour Duncan Double D pickups) features a 4-position blade switch that provides versatile tonal options by combining the bridge and neck pickups in different configurations. This setup is similar to a 4-way switch on a Telecaster but tailored to the Talladega’s unique P90-inspired pickups. The four positions, as described in reviews and technical discussions, are as follows:

Position 1 (Back): Bridge pickup only. This delivers the raw, twangy, and aggressive tone typical of the bridge Double D pickup, which has AlNiCo V polepieces and a copper reflector plate for enhanced string separation and Tele-like snap. It’s ideal for bright, cutting lead tones or classic rock rhythms.

Position 2: Neck and bridge pickups in parallel. This combines both pickups side-by-side, producing a balanced, bell-like tone with a mix of the bridge’s bite and the neck’s warmth. It’s described as having a “Roy Nichols with the Strangers” vibe, offering clarity and a slightly scooped midrange, suitable for country, blues, or clean arpeggios.

Position 3: Neck pickup only. The neck Double D pickup, with steel poles over P90-style bar magnets, provides a thick, warm, and gritty tone, often compared to Hubert Sumlin’s sound with Howlin’ Wolf. It’s great for fat, soulful leads or jazzy chords.

Position 4 (Forward): Neck and bridge pickups in series. This wires the pickups one behind the other, resulting in a louder, thicker, and more powerful tone with increased output and midrange. It’s described as “girthsome” and “fatty, greasy goodness,” excelling for heavy overdriven chords or Queen-style harmony leads.

Technical Notes:

The Double D pickups are humbucker-sized but single-coil in design, with the bridge pickup resembling a Tele-style single-coil and the neck pickup closer to a traditional P90. This hybrid design contributes to the switch’s tonal flexibility.
This 4-position switch makes the Talladega exceptionally versatile, covering a wide range of tones from twangy single-coil clarity to thick, humbucker-like power, all while retaining the unique character of the Double D pickups. For precise wiring diagrams, you might check resources like the Hamer Fan Club or Seymour Duncan forums, as users have shared troubleshooting tips for this setup.
